Fortnite, one of the most popular video games currently available, counts many celebrities amongst it’s fanbase. From rappers like Drake and Travis Scott, to professional athletes like JuJu Smith-Schuster and Trevor May, the popular “battle royale” mode of the game drops 100 players onto an isolated island filled with weapons and traps, with the last person standing claiming victory (duos and squads are also options).
Even the Russo brothers, Joe and Anthony, while working on Avengers: Infinity War (the fastest movie to $1 billion ever), would take some time to climb on the battle bus for a trip to tilted towers. “Over the past few months, while we were editing Infinity War, we’d take breaks to hop on and get in a few games,” Joe shared with EW. “And then we started thinking, how cool would it be to have some kind of Avengers-Fortnite mashup? So we stalked Donald.”
“Out of the blue, I get this call from Joe. And after a bit of geeking out over each other’s work, we start brainstorming these crazy ideas,” Donald Mustard, world wide creative director for EPIC games, said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, “It was really important that whatever we did, it had to be super authentic to both Fortnite and the Avengers: Infinity War, and something that fans of both would be excited about. About an hour later, we had the bones of this awesome idea for a limited time gameplay mode, and almost immediately our team got started.”
Starting tomorrow (May 8th) for a limited time, when players enter a battle royale on Fortnite, the game will look like any other. That is, until the Infinity Gauntlet, the ultimate reality warping/ending weapon, spawns somewhere on the map. One player will be granted the powers on the infinity stones, while the other players will simply wallow in despair as the Mad Titan descends upon them.
The “Infinity Gauntlet” mode will be available for free across all Battle Royale-friendly platforms.
