The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit

Adventure Awaits

On June 26th, the developers of the award-winning game Life is Strange, DONTNOD Entertainment, will be releasing their next game, The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit, via publisher SquareEnix. If that wasn’t exciting enough, the game will be released on Xbox One, PS4 and PC absolutely free. You read that right – the game will be free-ninety-free with no additional money required in order to experience the game in full. If the gameplay is anything like the Life is Strange franchise, it is sure to be an experience that gamers will enjoy every bit of.

Return to your childhood with a touching and heart-warming, one-of-a-kind narrative experience, from the directors and development team behind the BAFTA award-winning game LIFE IS STRANGE™. Chris is an ordinary 10-year old boy who wants to be a superhero. He loves his toys and has a big imagination that takes him on all sorts of adventures, but today is not one of his usual adventures, today something truly extraordinary will happen to him. – Official Synopsis for Captain Spirit.

The idea that you will be playing as a child and get to experience life through the lens of his imagination is magical.

Behind the Curtain

In a demo at E3 2018, the developers explained that they have taken the world of Life is Strange expanded it and made improvements including changing the engine from Unreal 3 to Unreal 4. In the footage and gameplay that was shown, the change is clearly visible. The design of the franchise has always been unique and intriguing. It has a defined style with a cross between realistic and animated graphics. Not only are the graphics stunning, the visuals of the series one could almost call cinematic as the developers have cleverly used camera angles to further the style of the games.

The developers have stated Captain Spirit will have far more of an open world sandbox feel to it, meaning gamers will be able to interact with their surroundings even more than in the previous games. Interactions with the surroundings will also include prerequisites. For example, once Chris activates his “superpowers,” further actions will be available to the player because regular ol’ Chris can’t perform these actions – he needs the “umph” of his superpowers.

Stories and Decisions

Captain Spirit will retain the choose-your-own-adventure aspect that Life is Strange fans are accustomed to. All decisions made, even changes to the environment, affect the course of the game. DONTNOD Entertainment has even gone as far as stating the decisions made in this game could even affect a gamers experience in the upcoming Life is Strange 2. Consequences that extend between games?! That’s ridiculous…LY AWESOME!

Based on the demo, Captain Spirit will have mission elements, meaning from the journal menu the player will have the opportunity to decide what quest or mission they would like to take on next, like build their superhero costume or take on The Evil Water Eater (AKA The Water Heater)

So far, in the Life is Strange franchise, fans have seen the original Life is Strange (2015) and the prequel, Life is Strange: Before the Storm (2017). That being said, in case you were wondering, Captain Spirit, takes place in the same universe. In fact, the developers have stated that Captain Spirit “will feature links to the brand-new story of LIFE IS STRANGE 2.” So, naturally, the developers have hidden several tiny easter eggs in Captain Spirit that only fans of the franchise will truly understand.

With all of this in mind, this writer is excited to dive in and experience the seemingly normal life of a 10-year old through the magic of his imagination because with DONTNOD Entertainment at the helm, it is sure to be beautiful to look at an amazing narrative and an all around good time.
